Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering Lecturer from UGM Win 1st Place in Innovation Poster Competition with Efficient Smart Drip Irrigation System

Yogyakarta, November 29, 2023 – Ir. Andri Prima Nugroho, Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., a lecturer and researcher in Smart Agriculture Research at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, UGM, achieved 1st place (gold certificate) in the Innovation Poster Competition at the National Seminar on Agricultural Industry Technology, a Meeting of the Communication Forum of Indonesian Agricultural Industry Technology Higher Education (FKPT-TPI) held at Padjadjaran University on November 15-16, 2023.

In the competition, Dr. Andri proposed an innovative idea for a smart irrigation system titled “Smart Agri Drip Irrigation System (SADIS): Smart Drip Irrigation System for Water Use Efficiency based on Hybrid Sensor Network.” This innovation is motivated by the desire to save water in irrigation.

Drip irrigation is an efficient method of water usage in irrigation. However, excessive water usage still occurs due to a lack of information about soil moisture and weather conditions. Therefore, there is a need for innovation that can improve water usage efficiency in drip irrigation through the implementation of a Smart System.

The Smart Agri Drip Irrigation System (SADIS) – Smart Drip Irrigation System for Water Efficiency Based on Hybrid Sensor is an innovation that combines soil moisture and environmental sensor technology (Automatic Weather Station) to monitor real-time soil moisture and weather conditions. It provides precise recommendations for the amount of water to be applied according to specific needs.

” This system can save water up to 13.37% compared to conventional drip irrigation systems,” said Dr. Andri.

The awarding of the gold certificate took place during the closing ceremony of the National Seminar on Agricultural Industry Technology, a Meeting of the Communication Forum of Indonesian Agricultural Industry Technology Higher Education (FKPT-TPI), which also coincided with the innovation competition for students.

With this achievement, Dr. Andri hopes to propose practical solutions for the implementation of smart agriculture in the upcoming challenges in agriculture, especially regarding climate change and the national food demand.
