Currently, agricultural production to support food security is facing pressure from various aspects. Population growth is putting pressure on agriculture to produce more food. On the other hand, land use change and climate change are challenges for agriculture to produce food. The impact of these pressures is very much suffered in the ability of the irrigation system to provide adequate water supply for agriculture. A research group from the Department of Agricultural Engineering and Biosystems, Faculty of Agricultural Technology UGM has begun researching the impact of climate change and land use changes on the ability of the irrigation system to provide water supply for food production and to develop a smart system for irrigation management that is able to adapt to climate change and land use. This research will furthermore contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) no 2 zero hunger and SDG no 13 climate action.
The research group led by Dr. Chandra Setyawan collaborates with researchers from several universities in Asia and elements of the Indonesian government. The research team members from UGM consist of Prof. Dr. Sigit Supadmo, Dr. Murtiningrum, Dr. Ansita Gupitakingkin Pradipta, Dr. Ngadisih, Dr. Hanggar Ganara Mawandha, and Dr. Muhamad Khoiru Zaki. Researchers from universities in Asia Pacific who participated were Dr. Sushil Kumar Himansu and Ms. Phantipa Planngklang from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Dr. Tran Dang An from Thuy Loi University (TLU) Vietnam, Dr. Ha Thi Hoadari Thai Nguyen University of Agricultural and Forestry (TUAF) Vietnam, as well as Mr. Muhammad Rasyid Ridho from Flinders University, Australia. The government officers as policy makers are Dr. Andi Sudirman from the Ministry of Public Works and Dr. Dede Sulaiman from the Ministry of Agriculture. This research received support from the Asia-Pacific Network (APN) for Global Change Research through the Collaborative Regional Research Programme (CRRP) scheme. To begin the 2023-2024 research activities, an online kick-off meeting was held on Monday, December 16, 2024. This meeting aims to align the perceptions of all research members regarding the research objectives and how this research will be carried out. The meeting began with an opening speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Prof. Dr. Eny Harmayani. In her speech, Prof. Dr. Eni Harmayani said that cooperation to anticipate the impact of climate change on water resources and food production is a necessity so that she supports an integrative solution between the latest technology, local wisdom, and policy frameworks. Next, Dr. Chandra Setyawan introduced all team members and explained the main themes of the proposed three-year research and in the first year. In the next session, Dr. Ansita Gupitakingkin Pradipta explained the overall framework and progress of the work that had been carried out until the period October – December 2024. This session was moderated by Dr. Ngadisih and ended with a discussion attended by all team members to sharpen the research objectives and plan the next steps of the ressearch.
