PPK Ormawa PERMATETA Team Conducted a Socialization & Training Session on The Use of Steam Boilers for Tofu Industry Operators in Magelang

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, PPK Ormawa PERMATETA team carried out a socialization and training event on the use of a steam boiler in collaboration with Hanim Zuhrotul Amanah, S.T.P., M.P., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. The event took place in Sambak Village, Kajoran Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, and was part of the Student Capacity Improvement Program (Program Peningkatan Kapasitas – PPK) organized by the Ministry of Research and Technology (Kemenristekdikti) under the supervision of the UGM Student Creativity Subdirectorate.

The Socialization and Training on Steam Boiler Usage was attended by the head of Sambak Village and the local community, especially those involved in the tofu industry. The event consisted of a presentation on the subject matter, followed by practical training on the use of the steam boiler at one of the production facilities where a steam boiler installation had been previously provided.

The socialization began with opening remarks from Putra Alfiansyah, the Chairperson of PPK Ormawa PERMATETA, followed by a speech from Muhammad Hafidz Syahputra, the Representative Chairperson of PERMATETA, and a speech from the head of Sambak Village, Mr. Dahlan.

In his speech, Mr. Dahlan expressed that once the community is aware of the benefits of using a steam boiler, he believes that all tofu industry operators in his area will surely adopt this technology. Furthermore, he added that the knowledge and information shared can be applied for the benefit of the community, especially for those involved in the tofu industry in Sambak Village.

Following the opening remarks, a presentation was conducted by Hanim Zuhrotul Amanah, S.T.P., M.P., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, commonly known as Bu Hanim. In her presentation, she highlighted the weaknesses of the traditional tofu production process, where a crust forms at the bottom of the pan, and the resulting tofu may have a smoky odor.

Bu Hanim then explained the application of steam boilers in the tofu industry, emphasizing their use in the cooking and sterilization of tofu. She also discussed the advantages of using a steam boiler, which can enhance tofu production capacity and improve the quality of the tofu produced. “Boilers can be located outside the production facility, making the production area cleaner, and avoiding contamination from fuel ash,” Bu Hanim explained.

After the presentation, a training session on the use of steam boilers was conducted by the PPK Ormawa PERMATETA team at one of the tofu production houses where a steam boiler had been installed. The tofu industry operators in Sambak Village showed great enthusiasm for the steam boiler equipment. During the training, the PPK Ormawa PERMATETA team explained the components and how to use the steam boiler. They found that using the steam boiler was relatively easy, and the results were very satisfying. This led some tofu industry operators to express an immediate interest in installing steam boiler equipment in their own tofu production facilities.

The hope is that through this socialization and training on the use of steam boilers, tofu industry operators in Sambak Village can gain a clearer understanding of steam boilers and implement them for more hygienic and environmentally friendly tofu production.
