Exploring Strategic Synergy: Ministry of Industry and UGM’s Agricultural Machinery Energy Laboratory Formulate the Direction of the National Agricultural Machinery Industry

Yogyakarta, September 18, 2025 – The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Directorate General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics (ILMATE), has taken a strategic step to strengthen the national agricultural machinery (alsintan) industry. As part of this important initiative, the Ministry engaged in preliminary discussions with the Agricultural Machinery and Energy Laboratory (EMP Lab) of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP) UGM, to coordinate the development of a comprehensive roadmap for the national agricultural machinery industry. The Ministry’s delegation was represented by Antonius Fernando Lumbantobing and Nafis Ulin Nuha.

The meeting, held at the TPB-FTP UGM Department Room, was warmly welcomed by the leadership team and experts from the EMP Lab. The session was led by Dr. Andri Prima Nugroho, Head of the EMP Lab, accompanied by Prof. Bambang Purwantana, Dr. Radi, Dr. Rudiati Evi Masithoh, Dr. Sri Markumningsih, and Dr. Makbul Hajad. Technical support was also provided by Marheri and Suryatmi, underscoring the EMP Lab’s readiness for this collaboration.

The presence of representatives from the Directorate General of the Ministry at the EMP Lab reflects a strong recognition of the laboratory’s expertise and longstanding track record in agricultural machinery research and development. The Ministry views the EMP Lab as a strategic partner with deep technical competence to contribute to shaping the future direction of agricultural technology—ensuring it is not only appropriate for local needs but also competitive at both national and global levels. This collaboration is expected to lay a strong foundation for sustained synergy between academia and government.

The roadmap development initiative also aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger): by driving innovation and improving agricultural productivity through efficient agricultural machinery technology.

  • SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): by strengthening research, development, and domestic capacity in agricultural machinery industries.

  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): by fostering strategic collaboration between higher education institutions and government policymakers.

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB) FTP UGM expressed optimism that this initial coordination will serve as a significant milestone in advancing the roadmap for the national agricultural machinery industry. Beyond that, the collaboration is expected to deliver tangible and sustainable benefits for farmers, industry stakeholders, and contribute to Indonesia’s economic development and food security.
