Digital Transformation in Agriculture: Dr. Andri Prima Nugroho Shares Smart Farming Innovations to Strengthen Food Security at UNS

Surakarta, 17 November 2025 – The Diploma Three Program in Agribusiness, Vocational School of Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), successfully held a public training session titled “Smart Farming Training to Achieve Food Security.” The event, conducted at the Aula FISIP, Building 1, 2nd Floor, featured Ir. Andri Prima Nugroho, S.T.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., APEC Eng., a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), as the main speaker.

This training served as a strategic initiative to encourage the digital transformation of Indonesia’s agricultural sector, focusing on the integration of Smart Farming technologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT) for enhanced data analysis—to improve production efficiency and strengthen national food security. The theme underscored the importance of combining technological innovation and scientific knowledge to build a resilient and adaptive future for Indonesian agriculture.

In his presentation titled “Digital Transformation in Agriculture: Smart & Precision Farming for Food Security,” Dr. Andri highlighted the crucial role of agricultural digitalization in supporting national food security. He introduced the fundamental concepts and principles of smart farming to develop efficient, precise, and sustainable production systems. Participants—comprising active students of UNS’s Agribusiness Diploma Program—gained valuable insights and had the opportunity to explore real-world applications of smart farming.

An engaging discussion and Q&A session followed, reflecting the participants’ strong enthusiasm. Several thought-provoking questions were raised, including the development and implementation of IoT in Indonesia, methods for measuring irrigation flow rates, cybersecurity concerns in agricultural technology, and the use of IoT in greenhouse systems to optimize the growth of crops such as chrysanthemums.

The “Smart Farming Training to Achieve Food Security” program directly contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger – By increasing agricultural efficiency and productivity through smart farming, the program supports efforts to strengthen national food security and reduce hunger.

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – The training enhances students’ knowledge and competencies in digital agriculture and smart farming, equipping them with essential skills for the future.

  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – The focus on IoT integration and technological innovation aligns with efforts to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.

  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – The collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Sebelas Maret demonstrates the importance of inter-institutional partnerships in achieving sustainable development objectives.

Through this program, it is expected that students of UNS’s Agribusiness Diploma Program will not only gain new knowledge but also be inspired to become change-makers in advancing Indonesia’s agricultural sector toward a more modern, resilient, and sustainable system for national food security.
