DTPB FTP UGM Lecturer Leads Implementation of GNPIP-Based Islamic Boarding School Economic Independence Pilot Project in North Sumatra

Medan, February 8–9, 2026 – A lecturer from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), Dr. Sri Rahayoe, led the implementation of a collaborative Pilot Project on Islamic Boarding School Economic Independence based on the National Movement for Food Inflation Control (Gerakan Nasional Pengendalian Inflasi Pangan/GNPIP) for horticultural commodities in North Sumatra. The program was assigned by the Department of Sharia Economics and Finance (DEKS) of Bank Indonesia to FTP UGM.

Greenhouse site readiness inspection by the team

The initiative applies a low-cost communal greenhouse approach as a model for strengthening horticulture-based economic activities within Islamic boarding schools. In North Sumatra, the program targets Pondok Pesantren Darularafah Raya, located at Jl. Berdikari 1A, Desa Lau Bakeri, Sampe Cita, Kutalimbaru District, Deli Serdang Regency.

As program leader, Dr. Sri Rahayoe coordinated a multidisciplinary team from UGM consisting of Hilda Maya Sintia Dewi, M.Sc. (research assistant at DTPB FTP UGM), Ir. Pujo Saroyo (Department of Agro-Industrial Technology, FTP UGM), Dodi Kastono, M.P. (Faculty of Agriculture UGM), and Irkhas Bayu Faveryan, M.Eng. (UGM Vocational School). The team supported technical planning and horticultural production development according to their respective areas of expertise.

Socialization of the program to the project participants

The program is implemented communally, involving five Islamic boarding schools. Pondok Pesantren Darularafah Raya serves as the mentor institution, while four other boarding schools act as mentees. This scheme is designed to facilitate technical assistance and shared production management.

To ensure common understanding and readiness for implementation, the team conducted a Program Socialization and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) over two days, February 8–9, 2026, in Medan. The event involved participating boarding schools, representatives from Bank Indonesia North Sumatra, and relevant local government agencies as stakeholders in horticultural commodity development.

Forum Group Discussion wtih the participants of the program

The FGD addressed technical and institutional aspects, including greenhouse site readiness, stakeholder roles, and field-level implementation mechanisms.

This activity reflects the active role of DTPB FTP UGM lecturers in managing collaborative community-based programs and strengthening local economic capacity. The program also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
