DTPB FTP UGM Lecturer Presents AI-Based Smart Agriculture Development at UGM AI Seminar

Yogyakarta, July 27, 2026 – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly significant role in transforming agriculture into a more precise, adaptive, and sustainable system. Demonstrating its contribution to AI-driven technological innovation, Ir. Andri Prima Nugroho, S.T.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., APEC Eng., a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), was invited as one of the featured speakers at the UGM AI Seminar: Research with Artificial Intelligence (AI), held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Multimedia Room 1, the UGM Central Office.

Organized by the UGM AI Center of Excellence, the seminar served as a platform for sharing research experiences, scientific findings, and AI-based products and applications developed across various disciplines at Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event also formed part of the preparation for the launch of the NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) at UGM.

A Collaborative Forum for Multidisciplinary AI Innovation

The seminar was divided into two main sessions: “Research with AI” and “AI-Based Product Development.” The first session explored the use of AI as a research methodology, while the second showcased innovative AI-powered products and applications developed to address challenges across multiple sectors.

Dr. Andri Prima Nugroho participated as a speaker in the “AI-Based Product Development” session alongside dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra, M.Sc., Ph.D., Sp.A., Subsp.Neuro., and Dr. Nur Mohammad Farda, S.Si., M.Cs. The session was moderated by Dr. Muhammad Fakhrurrifqi.

AI as a Decision-Making Engine in Smart Agriculture

During his presentation, Dr. Andri emphasized that the application of AI in agriculture extends far beyond the use of sensors, drones, or data visualization dashboards. According to him, the true value of artificial intelligence lies in its ability to transform diverse data sources into actionable information, predictions, and recommendations that support faster and more accurate decision-making.

This approach is becoming increasingly important as modern agriculture faces complex challenges, including climate change, environmental uncertainty, limited resources, and the growing demand for sustainable productivity. Consequently, the development of smart agriculture requires the integration of monitoring technologies, data analytics, predictive modeling, and Decision Support Systems (DSS).

Showcasing Smart Agriculture Innovations at UGM

During the seminar, Dr. Andri also introduced a range of research initiatives and technological innovations developed by the Smart Agriculture Research Center UGM. These include agricultural environmental monitoring systems, crop health assessment in open-field conditions, drone-based multispectral imaging integrated with plant physiological data, and data-driven controlled agricultural production systems.

These diverse data sources are integrated to enable early detection of changes in crop and environmental conditions, ultimately providing more precise recommendations for agricultural management.

Dr. Andri stressed that AI models for agriculture must be developed within the appropriate context. The models should consider crop characteristics, tropical agroecosystems, farming scales, and the actual needs of end users. Furthermore, field observations and direct measurements remain essential components of the validation process to ensure that AI-generated recommendations are scientifically reliable and practically applicable.

Strengthening Collaboration for AI-Driven Agricultural Innovation

The discussion session was highly interactive, covering topics such as AI model development, representative data requirements, field implementation, and the challenges associated with validating predictive models.

The discussion highlighted that advancing AI for agriculture requires multidisciplinary collaboration involving researchers, technology developers, government agencies, industry partners, students, and end users to ensure that technological innovations effectively address real-world agricultural challenges.

Dr. Andri Prima Nugroho’s participation in the UGM AI Seminar reflects the growing contribution of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, in developing AI-based solutions that address practical challenges in agriculture. By integrating agricultural sciences, biosystems engineering, instrumentation, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence, DTPB FTP UGM continues to drive the development of smart agriculture innovations that are adaptive, precise, and sustainable.

Through the organization of the UGM AI Seminar, Universitas Gadjah Mada also continues to strengthen its multidisciplinary AI research ecosystem while fostering new opportunities for collaboration in developing AI-powered technologies and applications that deliver tangible benefits to society.
