Commemorating 12 Years of the Clean Irrigation Movement, Prof. Sigit Supadmo Encourages Farmers to Take Active Role in Protecting the Environment and Irrigation Systems Bantul

In celebration of the 12th anniversary of the Clean Irrigation Movement (Gerakan Irigasi Bersih or GIB) Merti Tirta Amartani, a community dialogue was held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Bantul Regency. Prof. Dr. Ir. Sigit Supadmo Arif, M.Eng., a lecturer from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), was invited to be the keynote speaker in this dialogue.

GIB Merti Tirta Amartani is a grassroots movement initiated by Prof. Sigit Supadmo, in response to farmers’ concerns over the growing waste pollution in irrigation networks. Over the past 12 years, the movement has consistently engaged the farming community in efforts to keep irrigation channels clean and promote environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural systems.

The event was attended by farmer representatives involved in GIB as well as several government agencies in Bantul, including the Department of Public Works, Housing and Settlements; the Department of Food Security and Agriculture; and the Department of Environment. Dr. Murtiningrum represented the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, UGM, and expressed appreciation to the members of GIB for their dedication and contribution to environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture. Over the past 12 years, GIB has proven that hard work, community cooperation, and love for the environment can lead to meaningful change. The continuity of GIB activities stands as a testament to the dedication, resilience, and strong spirit of its members, supported by the Bantul Regency Government.

Prof. Sigit Supadmo, led the discussion with a talk on “The Role of GIB Merti Tirta Amartani in Environmental Protection and Irrigation Management.” The informal discussion featured active participation, with attendees sharing insights on the challenges and opportunities of sustaining irrigation systems and strengthening the role of farming communities in Sustainable environmental practices.

The event also highlights the importance of collaborative action between academia, farmers, and local government in conserving water resources and maintaining sustainable agricultural systems. Initiatives like GIB contribute significantly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Continued cooperation among farmers, government institutions, and academic stakeholders is expected to lead to more productive, efficient, and sustainable farming systems.
