DTPB FTP UGM–YESSA Hold Coffee Product Innovation Training to Support Sambak Tourism Village, Magelang

Magelang, December 9, 2025 — The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), in collaboration with the Yanmar Environmental Sustainability Support Agency (YESSA), reaffirmed its commitment to community empowerment by conducting a coffee product innovation training in Sambak Village, Kajoran District, Magelang Regency.

This activity was a follow-up to the collaborative program between DTPB FTP UGM and YESSA in developing a tourism village based on agro-edutourism. The training involved members of the Women Farmers Groups (Kelompok Wanita Tani/KWT) of Sambak Village and aimed to enhance the added value of local coffee commodities through product innovation aligned with current market trends and the tourism sector’s needs.

The training featured Dr. Devi Yuni Susanti, a lecturer at DTPB FTP UGM, as the main resource person, accompanied by Master’s students in Agricultural Engineering, Anisa Kistanti, S.T.P. and Rifa Fahmida, S.T.P. The event was officially opened with remarks from the Head of Sambak Village, Mr. Dahlan, who expressed strong appreciation and support for the initiative as a strategic effort to strengthen the village’s local economy.

During the practical session, Dr. Devi and her team introduced an innovative product named “Sambak Drip Coffee”, made from locally sourced Sambak coffee that had been ground and packaged into drip coffee bags. The product was further enhanced by incorporating distinctive local flavors such as mango kweni, jackfruit, cinnamon, and traditional kolak, creating a unique coffee variant that reflects the richness of Sambak’s local resources.

According to Dr. Devi, coffee product innovation in the form of drip coffee is in line with the evolving coffee consumption trends that emphasize practicality while maintaining quality and distinctive taste. “With proper post-harvest handling and packaging, Sambak coffee has strong potential to enter a wider consumer market and be marketed as a flagship product in tourist destinations and cafés across the Magelang region,” she explained.

Through this activity, DTPB FTP UGM expects that the people of Sambak Village, particularly members of the Women Farmers Groups, will gain new skills in agro-industrial product innovation, while simultaneously strengthening the village’s position as a sustainable agro-edutourism destination.

Furthermore, this coffee product innovation training aligns with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through strengthening local agro-based economies, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by increasing the value-added utilization of local coffee resources, and SDG 5 (Gender Equality) through the active involvement of women farmers in innovation and entrepreneurship processes. Through synergy between higher education institutions, industry partners, and rural communities, DTPB FTP UGM continues to promote inclusive and sustainable village empowerment models oriented toward improving community welfare.
