Yogyakarta, September 22, 2026 — The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FTP UGM), continues to strengthen academic and research capacity through a Bibliometrics Miniclass. Held at Room 384, FTP UGM Building, on Tuesday (September 22), the activity featured Safirotu Khoir, PhD., Coordinator of Public Relations and International Affairs at the UGM Library and Archives, and Janu Saptari, S.IP., Senior Librarian at the UGM Library, as speakers. The event was attended by 30 postgraduate students from the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Agricultural Engineering, FTP UGM.
The activity was organized to enhance the academic community’s understanding of the use of bibliometrics in supporting the retrieval, mapping, and analysis of scientific literature. Through this approach, researchers can gain an overview of developments within a particular field of study while identifying trends and relationships across scientific publications.
Bibliometrics as a Strategy to Support Research and Scientific Publications
During the Bibliometrics Miniclass, participants received an introduction to the use of bibliometric analysis as one of the strategies for developing research and scientific publications. Bibliometrics can be used to map the development of a particular field of knowledge based on existing publications and to examine relationships among various research topics and areas of study.
An understanding of bibliometric analysis is an important foundation for postgraduate students in conducting literature reviews more systematically. Mapping research developments can help researchers gain broader context regarding their fields of study before determining the focus and direction of their research.
The activity was also attended by Dr. Rudiati Evi Masithoh, Head of the Doctoral Program in Agricultural Engineering, FTP UGM, and Dr. Devi Yuni Susanti. Their participation further supported the implementation of the activity, which was aimed at strengthening academic capacity, particularly in supporting research processes and the development of scientific publications within DTPB FTP UGM.
Strengthening the Capacity of Postgraduate Students
The participation of 30 students from master’s and doctoral levels highlights the importance of mastering literature retrieval and analysis methods in the development of postgraduate research. Through this activity, students gained an opportunity to broaden their understanding of how scientific publications can be mapped and analyzed as part of the research development process.
The Bibliometrics Miniclass also provided a learning platform for members of the academic community to explore the use of publication data in supporting research activities. Proficiency in literature analysis is expected to help researchers identify research developments, discover research opportunities, and develop publications that are relevant to advances in science and knowledge.
Through capacity-building activities such as this, DTPB FTP UGM continues to foster an academic environment that supports improvements in research quality and scientific publications. The use of bibliometrics is expected to serve as one of the strategies for lecturers and students to develop literature-based research in a more systematic and focused manner.
