DTPB FTP UGM and YESSA Hold Coffee Product Innovation Competition in Sambak Village

Magelang, June 26, 2026 – After more than four years of continuous coffee development assistance, the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, together with the YESSA Program and the Sambak Village Government, organized a Coffee Product Innovation Competition to recognize the achievements of seven Women’s Farmer Groups. The event highlighted how sustained technology transfer, training, and mentoring have fostered innovative, value-added coffee products with promising economic potential.

The competition brought together seven Women’s Farmer Groups (Kelompok Wanita Tani/KWT) from Sambak Village to showcase innovative coffee products and unique coffee flavor creations. The event served as a platform for participants to demonstrate their creativity while exchanging ideas and experiences in developing value-added coffee products.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Devi Yuni Susanti expressed her appreciation to all participating Women’s Farmer Groups for their commitment throughout the coffee development program. She explained that the competition marked the final stage of a series of training activities conducted over the past several years.

“This competition represents the culmination of the coffee training programs attended by the Women’s Farmer Groups. We hope they will continue developing coffee innovations so that the benefits can be sustained within the community,” she said.

Representing the Sambak Village Government, Dahlan expressed his hope that the program would generate additional income for Women’s Farmer Groups and their households through coffee processing activities.

Meanwhile, Prof. Lilik Sutiarso emphasized that DTPB FTP UGM would continue providing technical assistance even after the formal training program ended.

“If the participants encounter any challenges, they are welcome to consult DTPB for advice and technical support. One of the remaining challenges is strengthening the marketing of their coffee products,” he explained.

The coffee innovation program in Sambak Village has been initiated by DTPB FTP UGM through the YESSA Program since 2022. The program includes post-harvest technology transfer, production improvement, and marketing assistance.

One of the technologies introduced is the use of a dome dryer to replace traditional ground drying methods, resulting in a cleaner, more efficient, and higher-quality coffee drying process.

According to Yunaida, one of the Women’s Farmer Group leaders, the competition broadened participants’ perspectives by exposing them to various innovative products developed by other groups.

“This competition introduced us to many creative coffee products developed by other Women’s Farmer Groups. It has inspired us to explore the potential of local spices available in Sambak Village for future coffee product innovations,” she said.

At the end of the event, the committee announced the winners of the 2026 Sambak Village Coffee Product Innovation Competition. KWT Sekar Manis won First Place, followed by KWT Nusa Indah in Second Place, KWT Anggrek Bulan in Third Place, while KWT Sekar Mawar received the Favorite Award.

Through this competition, DTPB FTP UGM and YESSA hope to strengthen coffee innovation, increase the value of local coffee products, and enhance the economic empowerment of Women’s Farmer Groups in Sambak Village.
