UGM Conducts Feasibility Study on Production Facilities to Support Economic Development in Transmigration Area of Telang, Banyuasin

Banyuasin, October 25, 2025 — A team of researchers from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), consisting of lecturers from various faculties, has conducted a Feasibility Study on Production Facilities for Economic Development in the Telang Transmigration Area, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. This initiative aims to explore the potential and assess the feasibility of the area’s leading commodities as part of strengthening the development of transmigration regions through a multidisciplinary research approach.

The Transmigration Area Development Program seeks to promote equitable regional growth, open new economic opportunities, and improve community welfare by optimizing local resource potential. The Telang Transmigration Area in Banyuasin is among the regions being developed to enhance agricultural and fisheries-based economic resilience.

The UGM research team includes Dr. Rika Harini, S.Si., M.P. (Faculty of Geography), Dr. Radi (Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Technology), and Fatimah P.L., S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Faculty of Economics and Business).

The study forms part of the Ministry of Transmigration’s program to strengthen the development of transmigration areas, covering field surveys, primary data collection, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving community groups, village and district governments, technical agencies, and BAPPEDA Banyuasin. Through a participatory approach, the team identified key potentials and challenges in developing the area’s economy based on local resources.

The participation of Dr. Radi from DTPB FTP UGM highlights the department’s academic expertise and practical contribution in supporting regional development through the application of agricultural engineering and sustainable production systems.

This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 2 (Zero Hunger): strengthening sustainable agriculture and food security,

  • SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): promoting local economic growth based on regional potential,

  • SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): supporting resilient and inclusive transmigration area development, and

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production): advancing sustainable production and resource management systems.

The findings of this feasibility study are expected to serve as policy and planning recommendations for the future development of the Telang Transmigration Area. Furthermore, this cross-faculty collaboration demonstrates UGM’s strong commitment to integrating research, technology, and community empowerment in advancing sustainable rural development in Indonesia.
