What is the importance of testing for Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus? These three elements are crucial to life on Earth. Global warming or the increase in Earth’s temperature is caused by disruptions in the Carbon and Nitrogen cycles, which will have adverse effects on human health and the environment. Agriculture is closely related to Nitrogen and Phosphorus, as they are essential nutrients for plant growth and are also byproducts or waste from biomass production activities. One indicator of sustainable agriculture is low Carbon emissions.
To achieve the framework of low Carbon agricultural development, mitigation strategies are implemented by the farming community. This mitigation is monitored by measuring the Carbon emissions produced by each strategy, which then serves as the basis for improving future strategies.
The advancement of technology and digitization has transformed the methods of Carbon measurement and testing equipment. Carbon measurement can be done concurrently with Nitrogen-Phosphorus testing using a C/N Analyzer. In 2018, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at UGM received support from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria for Carbon-Nitrogen-Phosphorus testing, including a CN Analyzer device and basic theoretical training on its operation for technicians from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DABE) and the Department of Food Technology and Agricultural Product (DFTAP). In 2023, BOKU provided further support to the Faculty of Agricultural Technology UGM by providing training on the operation and maintenance of the C/N Analyzer to 2 technicians, 2 lecturers, and 3 students. Technicians from DFTAP received basic training in 2018, and new technicians from DABE learned about the operation and maintenance of the C/N Analyzer. Muhamad Khoiru Zaki, S.P., M.P., Ph.D., IPM, a new lecturer in DABE, along with Dr. Ngadisih, S.T.P, M.Sc., IPM, also participated in the training. Students from the undergraduate program and 2 from the master’s program in Agricultural Engineering also took part in the training as their research is related to the Carbon cycle in agricultural land. In 2023, in addition to the experts, BOKU provided a microbalance to weigh plant/soil samples that would be tested in the C/N Analyzer. BOKU staff were present in person and provided assistance to the Faculty of Agricultural Technology UGM’s lecturers, staff, and students, including Priv. Doz. Dipl.-lng. Dr. Katharina M. Keiblinger, Ass. Prof. Dipl.-lng. Dr. Axel Mentler, Priv.-Doz. Rebecca Hood-Nowotny MBA Ph.D., B.Sc., and Dr. Gernot Bodner.
This knowledge and skills enhancement for the academic community of FTP UGM is part of the events for the 12th Anniversary (Lustrum XII) of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology UGM. It represents a capacity-building effort to support Indonesia’s sustainable agro-industrial development in the era of digital society.
