Students of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (DTPB), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, carried out an industrial visit to UD Sri Rahayu, a rice production enterprise located in Gilangharjo, Pandak, Bantul. The visit was conducted in two batches on 22 November 2025 and 2 December 2025, as part of the learning activities for the Unit Operations course. The students were accompanied by course lecturers Dr. Hanim Zuhrotul Amanah and Dr. Dwi Ayuni, who guided and facilitated the academic and industrial discussions throughout the visit.

This activity aimed to provide students with first-hand exposure to how unit operations are applied in real food processing industries, particularly in rice production. During the visit, students observed directly how rice is processed from raw grain to packaged product ready for market distribution. The owner of UD Sri Rahayu, Arif Yuniarto Kurniawan, welcomed the students and explained the workflow, production standards, and business management practices implemented in the factory.
Students were introduced to several key rice processing stages, including sorting, polishing, and packaging, which are essential to maintain quality and value of rice products. Through this field observation, students gained a deeper understanding of industrial workflow efficiency, equipment utilization, and the role of engineering principles in improving productivity.
In addition to technical aspects, the visit also broadened students’ perspectives on quality control, production management, and challenges faced by small and medium-scale food industries in meeting consumer demand. The interactive discussion encouraged students to connect theory learned in class with real industrial applications, strengthening their analytical skills and awareness of future innovation opportunities in food processing.

This industrial visit reflects DTPB UGM’s commitment to experiential learning, bridging academic knowledge and professional practice. By engaging with industry partners, students are expected to enhance their readiness for the professional field, foster innovation, and gain valuable insight into agricultural product processing.
The activity also contributes to the advancement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
🔹 SDG 4 – Quality Education, through field-based learning and skill development;
🔹 SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, by introducing students to the dynamics of local agribusiness and production chains;
🔹 SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, through exposure to efficient and standardized rice processing practices.
Through this industrial visit, DTPB UGM continues to strengthen its role in producing competent graduates capable of driving innovation in the food processing sector and supporting sustainable agricultural development.
