Kuliah tamu disampaikan oleh Dr. Muhammad Heikal Ismail, senior lecturer dari Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UPM Serdang Malaysia.

Suasana kuliah tamu

The guest lecture took place in the Meeting Room of DTPB at FTP UGM and was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Heikal Ismail, a senior lecturer from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UPM Serdang, Malaysia.

The atmosphere during the guest lecture

Dr. Heikal Ismail emphasized that food waste is a significant global issue, with developed countries such as the USA, UK, Singapore, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan being major contributors to food waste. Literature shows that the largest component of organic waste worldwide is food waste, accounting for approximately 30.7%. In developing countries, the issue of food waste is often found at the early stages of the production chain. Food waste, as organic waste, represents significant potential for conversion into biogas and fertilizer. Dr. Heikal expressed a keen interest in the community empowerment initiatives undertaken by DTPB FTP UGM, particularly regarding biogas projects in Selopamioro Village, Bantul, and Sambak Village, Magelang, for energy and fertilizer production. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under point 2 (sustainable agriculture) and point 7 (affordable and clean energy).

The guest lecture also included discussions on the follow-up actions for managing food waste into biogas and fertilizer. These discussions were attended by Dr. Andri Prima Nugroho, the Head of the Environmental Engineering Laboratory for Agricultural Buildings, along with DTPB lecturers Dr. Prieskarinda Lestari and Dr. Ngadisih.
